Through the Darkness is a drama that presents a criminal theme. Set in the 1990s, Through the Darkness tells the story of the police who are faced with a serial murder case. The culprit is a mysterious figure nicknamed “Red Hat”. Red Hat’s pattern of serial killings is complex and difficult to predict. In order for the case to be solved quickly, the police got an idea to examine the personality of the criminal whose actions were imitated by Red Hat.

1. Uirimji Reservoir
In episode 1, the young Song Ha-young was seen riding a duck boat with her mother and fell into the water by accident. Scene this is done at the Uirimji Reservoir.
Uirimji Reservoir is one of the three most famous ancient reservoirs in South Korea with impressive views. Established in 2006, Uirimji Reservoir is located in the Jecheon neighborhood of Mosan.
2. Iksan Prison Set
In episode 2, Song Ha-young (Kim Nam-gil) visits the crime suspect Yang Yong-chul (Ko Gun-han) in this prison. The prison that became the setting for this filming was not a real prison, but a special place for filming and drama purposes.
Iksan Prison Set is a prison that was established in 2005 for the film Holiday. Previously, the place where this prison was set was an elementary school for boys. The prison set itself consists of a meeting room, an interrogation room, and a detention facility. The Iksan Prison Set is located in the city of Iksan, about 3 hours south of Seoul.
3. Golmokjib Hwarogui – Handaepo
The Behavior Analysis Team came here to eat after Cho Hyun-gil was detained. This restaurant is the setting in episode 4.
Golmokjib Hwarogui Restaurant also known as Handaepo is a Korean barbeque restaurant. It’s at the end of an alley in the Seoul Hangangno neighborhood, in the Yongsan District.

4. Private Pyeongchang-dong Mansion No. 566-22
This house appears in episode 5. This house is where an economics professor and his wife were murdered.

This private house is located in the Seoul Pyeongchang neighborhood [Pyeongchang-dong/평창동], in Jongno District. This house with a large yard turned out to be a shooting location for many dramas, such as Ghost Doctor (2022), Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce) (2021, S1); Flower of Evil (2020); SKY Castle (2018-19), and many more.
5. Honey Subway Station
Nam Ki-tae (Kim Joong-hee) climbed the stairs of Exit 7 at this station in the early hours of the morning after committing the murder in episode 7. Then in episode 9, Song Ha-young (Kim Nam-gil) headed to Exit 3 of this station after night walk following the trail of assassins in the Southwest.
The shooting was done at Madu Station. The station opened in 1996, serves Seoul Subway Line 3 and carries subway station no. 312. Located in Jungang-ro in the Goyang Janghang neighborhood of Ilsandong District.
After interrogating Gu Yong-chun (Han Jun-woo) in prison, Song Ha-young (Kim Nam-gil) and Kook Young-soo (Jin Sun-kyu) drink at Mulgogi to relieve depression. This scene is in episode 8.
Mulgogi—which means ‘fish’ in Korean—is a Japanese restaurant that serves sashimi and seafood. In this restaurant there is one spot unique, namely in the window. There is a poem written in red on a restaurant window and made in the Jeolla dialect, the poem is an interpretation of how a mother regrets not being able to educate her children well enough.
7. Yakhyeon Cathedral
This cathedral has been the shooting location for many Korean dramas, such as Reflection of You (2021); High Class (2021); The Penthouse S3 (2021); Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol (2020); Her Private Life (2019), and many more. In the drama Through the Darkness episode 7, this cathedral appears when Song Ha-young (Kim Nam-gil) accompanies his mother to church for mass in the morning.
This cathedral, named Yakhyeon, is a Catholic church located in the Jungnim neighborhood of Seoul, Jung District. In 2012, the church was selected as one of the 100 regular filming locations for films and dramas by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Film Council, and was featured in a brochure The Places In Seoul Cinema Fell in Love With.
8. Ilmin Museum of Art
In episode 10, there was news about a serial killer that was broadcast live on this screen. The screen is outside the Ilmin Art Museum building.
The Ilmin Museum of Art is a private museum focused on Korean art. The museum carries the pen name Kim Ilmin and is based on an art collection acquired during his lifetime. This museum building has been recognized as landmarks irreplaceable culture, and was also selected as one of the ten cultural assets of Seoul’s modern architecture in 2010.
