8 Japanese Players in the Bundesliga in 2021/2022

Japan is an Asian country with a capable soccer power. This is evident from the ranking of the State of Sakura which now occupies the second position in the FIFA AFC zone. This East Asian country is known to have a myriad of talented players for a long time.

Not just showing off in Asia, many Japanese players have careers in Europe. The German Bundesliga is one of the competitions where Japan’s top players are often involved.

1. Makoto Hasebe

Makoto Hasebe has been in the Bundesliga since January 2008. At first, he defended Wolfsburg after moving from Urawa Reds. Five and a half seasons later, he moved to FC Nuremberg. It was only in July 2014, Hasebe joined Eintracht Frankfurt and still survives to this day.

In all, the defensive midfielder has played in 353 Bundesliga matches, scoring 7 goals and 21 . assist. He has also tasted 1 Bundesliga title and 1 DFB Pokal title. At the age of 38, Hasebe is under contract with Frankfurt until June 2023.

2. Genki Haraguchi

Genki Haraguchi is a Japanese player who operates as an attacking midfielder. He started his career in the Bundesliga in July 2014 after being recruited by Hertha Berlin from Urawa Reds. He then played in the second tier of the German League with Fortuna Dusseldorf and Hannover in January 2018-2021.

Haraguchi finally returned to the Bundesliga after being brought in by Union Berlin in July 2021. He became a mainstay in the club’s midfield. The 30-year-old has played in 142 Bundesliga matches, scoring 5 goals and 16 . assist.

3. Takuma Asano

Takuma Asano is a Japanese player in the position of winger. He is currently in uniform with VfL Bochum after joining in July 2021. Previously, he tasted the Bundesliga competition with VfB Stuttgart and Hannover on loan from Arsenal.

As a wingerAsano has played 47 matches in the Bundesliga with 2 goals and 1 assist. The 27-year-old still has time to improve given that his contract at VfL Bochum is available until June 2024.

4. Daichi Kamada

Not only Makoto Hasebe, Daichi Kamada is also a Japanese player who is currently defending Eintracht Frankfurt. Frankfurt brought him from Sagan Tosu in July 2017. A season later, Kamada was loaned to Belgian club Sint-Truidense VV.

After returning from a loan spell, Kamada became Frankfurt’s mainstay as an attacking midfielder. He played 86 games in the Bundesliga, scoring 9 goals and 23 assist. He also won a DFB Pokal title. The 25-year-old midfielder still has a term of service to Frankfurt until June 2023.

5. Wataru Endo

Wataru Endo is a player and captain of VfB Stuttgart who plays as a defensive midfielder. He has been with the club since August 2019. Initially as a loan player from Sint-Truidense VV. In that season, Stuttgart was also still competing in the Bundesliga 2.

Endo was then able to bring Stuttgart promotion to the Bundesliga in 2020/2021. It makes the contract permanent. So far, he has played in 58 games in the Bundesliga scoring 6 goals and 6 . assist. The 29-year-old midfielder has a contract duration until June 2024.

6. Keita Endo

Keita Endo became a teammate of Genki Haraguchi at Union Berlin. He was originally a loan player from Japanese club, Yokohama F. Marinos, in 2020/2021. Union Berlin then made it permanent in July 2021.

Acting in position winger, this 24-year-old player has only played 20 times in the Bundesliga with only 1 goal. Even so, Keita still has the opportunity to develop considering that his contract still exists until June 2023.

7. Masaya Okugawa

Another Japanese-blooded player who is now taking part in the Bundesliga is Masaya Okugawa. He has been part of Arminia Bielefeld since January 2021 after joining from RB Salzburg. However, its status was only made permanent in July 2021.

Okugawa is a 25-year-old attacking midfielder. He was relied on by Arminia Bielefeld in building attacks by recording 37 appearances, 9 goals and 3 assist in the Bundesliga. Okugawa’s contract lasts until June 2024.

8. Hiroki Ito

Hiroki Ito is the latest name to grace the Bundesliga stage this season. He joined VfB Stuttgart and became a partner of Wataru Endo in July 2021. He was signed on loan from Jubilo Iwata.

Ito is quite relied on by VfB Stuttgart as a central defender, having appeared 21 times in the Bundesliga. In fact, he was also able to contribute one goal. The 22-year-old defender’s loan period will end in June 2022.

Japan seems to never run out of talent. For this reason, other top names from the Land of the Rising Sun are likely to appear and follow their careers in the Bundesliga.
