Jakarta, IDN Times – Chairman of the Golkar Party Airlangga Hartarto met Chairman of the National Democratic Party Surya Paloh at the NasDem DPP office, Cikini area, Central Jakarta, Thursday 10 March 2022. During the meeting, Airlangga seemed to send a signal that in the 2024 DKI Jakarta gubernatorial election, the two presidents agreed to carrying Ahmad Sahroni and Airin Rachmy Diani.
Ahmad Sahroni is known to be the General Treasurer of the NasDem Party and Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the DPR. Meanwhile, Airin is a former Mayor of South Tangerang. In yesterday’s meeting, both Sahroni and Airin were seen attending.
“We saw that Mrs. Airin and Mr. Sahroni were also present here. The discussion was not only about macro but also detailed micro talk,” said Airlangga in a meeting on Thursday yesterday.
Previously, Airin and Sahroni had long been rumored to be running in the 2024 DKI Jakarta Pilkada. Chair of the Gerindra Party DPD Advisory Board Muhammad Taufik once said that there were a number of names that could potentially replace Anies Baswedan as DKI Jakarta Governor.
He mentioned four names, namely Anies, Ahmad Riza Patria, Investment Minister/Head of BKPM Bahlil Lahadalia, and Airin Rachmy Diani. Furthermore, Taufik said in early January 2022 that to take care of Jakarta, young people needed to be involved.
“Jakarta needs a visionary figure related to the change in Jakarta’s status as the capital city, what will he do,” Taufik told the media last January 4.
Did Airlangga at the same time ask for Surya Paloh’s blessing regarding the Airin-Sahroni duet to run in the 2024 Jakarta Pilkada?
1. Airlangga invites Sahroni-Airin to announce their candidacy later
When confirmed by the media, Airlangga did not explicitly say that Sahroni and Airin would advance to become cagub and cawagub Jakarta. The man, who also serves as Coordinating Minister for the Economy, fully handed over the announcement to Sahroni and Airin.
“So, if Mr. Sahroni and Mrs. Airin, we invite Mr. Sahroni and Mrs. Airin to speak first at a later time. Not on Thursday afternoon,” said Airlangga.
Previously, the head of the NasDem Party faction in the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Wibi Andrino, said that the party he belongs to is likely to encourage Ahmad Sahroni to run in the 2024 Pilkada. According to Wibi, Sahroni has high capability and electability in Jakarta.
“We from DKI Jakarta consider the figure of Ahmad Sahroni as one of the cadres who has high electoral and capability in Jakarta,” Wibi said on January 4, 2022 to the media.

2. Surya Paloh admits that he also discussed the issue of postponing the 2024 election with Airlangga
In addition to signaling that Airin and Sahroni would duet in the Jakarta Pilkada, Airlangga acknowledged that he also discussed the issue of postponing the 2024 General Election. NasDem’s position includes a row of political parties that refuse to postpone the 2024 election. Meanwhile, Airlangga is in a supportive position.
“To be honest, we discussed it,” said Surya as quoted by the news agency AMONG, Friday (11/3/2022).
Paloh did not deny that there were differences in perspectives or views between the two political parties regarding the postponement of the election. However, the two political parties chose not to question the differences for a long time.
“There is no need for a prolonged discourse. Please, if the parties can believe that the conception of the idea can work and be continued. NasDem still respects it, but of course NasDem is certainly the same as my brother from the big family of the Golkar Party DPP, there is no difference between them.” us,” he said.
3. NasDem will not be pro-active in holding discussions on the postponement of the 2024 General Election
During the meeting, Paloh also said that NasDem would not be proactive in mobilizing discussions among the general chairpersons of the government coalition political parties, so that the 2024 elections would be postponed. Paloh ensured that if NasDem was asked for input, he would provide input to reject the postponement of the 2024 election.
“I’m not taking a proactive position. I’ve explained NasDem’s stance in public. However, if I am asked (for input) as a senior brother, of course I have to take the initiative and we’ll see in the future,” said Paloh.
So far, the government, the General Elections Commission (KPU), and the DPR have agreed that the 2024 vote will be held on February 14. However, suddenly a number of political party elites threw a discourse so that the 2024 elections were postponed for the next one to three years.
