Suara.com – People with myopia or high eye minus at a young age are asked to be careful, because they are more at risk of experiencing retinal detachment or detachment of the retinal layer, which can lead to blindness.
Retinal detachment in medical terms is called rhegmatogenous retinal detachment or rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), which is a condition where the retina is detached due to a hole or tear in the retina.
The Head of Vitreo-Retina Service and Vitreo-Retina Ophthalmologist Subspecialist JEC Eye Hospitals & Clinics said, Dr. dr. Elvioza, SpM(K) that not only the elderly (elderly) are at risk for retinal detachment, but this risk is greater if the younger age already suffers from myopia.

This was revealed by Dr. Elvioza in his dissertation research at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), which compared young retinal detachment patients with myopia and elderly retinal detachment patients without myopia.

“This research that I initiated, aims to compare the premature aging process in the vitreous of young RRD patients who suffer from myopia with elderly RRD patients without myopia,” said Dr. Elvioza in a press conference at JEC Eye Hospitals & Clinics, Friday (11/3/2022).
The vitreous is a jelly-like structure in the eye that functions to maintain the shape of the eye and hold the retina.
Dr. Elvioza said retinal detachment is indeed prone to occur in people aged over 50 years, plus at that age also many people also experience myopia, so they have two risk factors.
“Young people with high minus have to be careful, they have to check their retinas, whether there is a potential for retinal detachment or tearing,” he explained.
That’s why Dr. Elvioza, people with young myopia are asked to be more careful, and routinely perform retinal examinations, at least every 6 months.

He added, retinal detachment often occurs suddenly, but there are early symptoms that must be watched out for before it actually occurs in the near future.
