Miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of pregnancy before the 20th week. Most miscarriages occur before the 12th week of pregnancy. Symptoms of a miscarriage include vaginal spotting or bleeding, pain or cramping in the abdomen or lower back, and discharge or tissue from the vagina.

“Studies show that the Covid-19 corona virus binds to various organs in the body, including the corona virus protein ACE2 in early placental tissue. This makes young pregnancies vulnerable to the effects of the corona virus,” said dr. Muskaan Chhabra, Consultant, Birla Fertility & IVF told HT Digital quoted from Hindustan Times.

He added that the cytokine storm which is a complication associated with the Covid-19 coronavirus could also have a deleterious effect on fetal development and embryo implantation.

A report published in a scientific journal PLOS One said that the corona virus can cause inflammation of the placenta which results in delays in fetal growth and causes miscarriage.

The coronavirus can also cause birth-related complications in infected women towards the end of pregnancy.

“Pregnant women with Covid-19 generally have good pregnancy outcomes. However, the indirect impact of Covid-19 will be very large, including an increase in stillbirth rates,” he explained.
