BMKG-BRIN Created a Red and White Tsunami Model

Jakarta, IDN Times – Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, said that the tsunami modeling that his agency will develop with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) does not only provide predictions for the estimated arrival time of waves, heights, and tsunami run-up.

“The model, which is named ‘Red and White Tsunami Modeling’, also includes the inundation or the furthest horizontal distance reached by the tsunami wave from the coastline, which can be used to estimate the worst tsunami impact,” he said. AMONGWednesday (9/3/2022).

1. Predictive data presented in the Red and White Tsunami Modeling is much sharper

The point, said Dwikorita, is that the prediction data presented will be much sharper. Inundation modeling can also be used further to predict the impact and material and non-material losses that will occur if a tsunami hits.

“For example, how many villages were swept away by the tsunami, what infrastructure was in the zone, residents, and so on,” he said.

Dwikorita explained that all the data released later also has a much higher level of accuracy. As a result, the mitigation efforts carried out by the government will be more comprehensive in reducing the risks and losses that may arise.

The Red and White Tsunami modeling, said Dwikorita, will also involve many experts, including the Chair of the Indonesian Tsunami Experts Association, Dr. Gegar Prasetya, as well as several researchers from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM).

This Red and White Tsunami Modeling Development activity was also escorted by the Assistant Deputy for Basic Infrastructure, Urban and Water Resources (Asdep IDPSDA) of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Rahman Hidayat.

3. BMKG has developed 20 thousand tsunami models since 2008

Meanwhile, Deputy for Geophysics of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Suko Prayitno, said that since 2008 the BMKG has developed 20 thousand tsunami models.

A total of 5,000 models are aid grants from Germany, but only cover the western area of Sumatra Island and southern Java Island. Meanwhile, the remaining 15 thousand models are models made by BMKG.

“We hope that the number of the Red and White Tsunami Modeling developed with BRIN will be much larger with various parameters and possibilities. Starting from the magnitude, hypocenter, source of the earthquake, the cause of the earthquake, and so on,” said Suko.

Meanwhile, the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Bambang Prayitno, emphasized that BMKG is ready to cooperate and collaborate with BRIN, including in terms of tsunami research.

According to him, this will be very useful for strengthening the Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) which has been owned by the BMKG.

“Hopefully within 1-2 years this collaboration can be realized,” added Bambang.
