TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Liverpool won the 2021/2022 Carabao Cup after beating Chelsea on penalties 11-10 in the final match at Wembley Stadium on Monday morning WIB.
The two teams drew 0-0 in extra time. While VAR was recorded four times to annull goals in that match, three for Chelsea and one for Liverpool.
In the sixth minute, Chelsea had their first chance on the counter-attack when Cesar Azpilicueta pulled a cross which was met by Christian Pulisic in the penalty area but the ball went straight into Caoimhin Kelleher’s arms.
Liverpool try to get out of Chelsea’s pressure. Their first chance came in the 17th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross was headed in by Sadio Mane in the box but the ball went wide.
After the game was running for 25 minutes, Liverpool turned to dominate. However, they are still having trouble creating chances. In the 30th minute, Mane wasted a chance after his shot was too slow so it could be parried by Edouard Mendy.
The two teams exchanged attacks for the rest of the first half, but the score remained until the break.
Chelsea immediately step on the gas after the break. In the 49th minute, the Blues threatened through Mount who was free in the penalty box after escaping the offside trap.
Just dealing with Kelleher, the England midfielder’s kick actually sent the ball into the inside post and failed to bear fruit.
Liverpool were able to threaten the first time in the round in the 64th minute. It started with a Mendy pass error that fell to the feet of Liverpool players and continued with a through ball to the left side.
Salah met the pass before Thiago Silva quickly cleared the ball to prevent it from crossing the goal line.
Three minutes later, Liverpool scored through Joel Matip continued Alexander-Arnold’s free kick situation. Unfortunately the goal was then annulled by VAR because Virgil van Dijk was deemed to have violated Reece James in the process.
Chelsea threatened Liverpool several times, but Mendy appeared brilliant in making saves. The 0-0 score lasted until normal time ended, so the match had to proceed to extra time.
Chelsea scored a goal in the first half of extra time, precisely in the 97th minute through Lukaku’s shot. However, the goal was disallowed by VAR because the striker was in an offside position when he received Trevoh Chalobah’s through ball.
There were no dangerous chances from either team during the first 15 minutes and the score remained spectacled.
Chelsea scored again in the second half of extra time through Havertz from the left and found the ball into the net against Kelleher. However, VAR again annulled the goal because the player was caught offside.
Chelsea tried to find a goal, but Liverpool’s defense was still difficult to penetrate. Thomas Tuchel brought on Kepa Arrizabalaga for Edouard Mendy as the match looked set to go to a penalty shootout.
All kickers from Liverpool and Chelsea were successful until each goalkeeper had to take his 11th kick. Kelleher got the job done before Kepa’s shot bounced to give Liverpool an 11-10 win in the Carabao Cup final.
