Chelsea loses on penalties in Carabao Cup final, Tuchel doesn’t want to blame Kepa

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Chelsea failed to win the Carabao Cup after losing on penalties to Liverpool in the final at Wembley, Sunday night, 28 February 2022.

The two teams drew 0-0 in extra time. Chelsea finally had to bite the finger after losing 10-11 in a penalty shootout.

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel has refused to blame substitute goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for his side’s defeat.

In that match, Kepa replaced Edouard Mendy at the end of extra time. Tuchel hopes to repeat the same success when they beat Villarreal in the Super Cup last August.

However, in the final this time the conditions did not go as expected for Chelsea. All 10 kickers from both teams scored. It was the goalkeeper’s turn to execute the penalty. Kepa failed to score, while Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was successful with his execution.

Tuchel refuses to blame Kepa Arrizabalaga. “I feel bad for him but he doesn’t deserve the blame,” he said. “If you want to blame someone, blame me. I made the decisions and I didn’t choose them to be heroes.”

“We took decisions like we did last time (in the Super Cup) in a penalty shoot-out. Everyone knows how good he is. Unfortunately, he couldn’t save the penalty, which he did brilliantly.”

Tuchel thinks Kepa has been a little better at saving penalties. “And that’s why I made this decision. It’s not unusual that 11 players have to shoot and he took it (the penalty) a bit too soon,” he said.

“Sometimes these things can turn against you. But you have to make (decisions) when needed, not after, when people can judge you.”

“Football can be a brilliant game and it was a brilliant game, no worries and no regrets.”

Tuchel also highlighted Romelu Lukaku’s goal disallowed in extra time. He considered the goal as an important moment in a grueling match and he did not agree with the referee’s decision to judge Lukaku offside.

“We gave everything and it was a brilliant game of football,” he said. “The goal disallowed for Romelu was a very close verdict, there are bad feelings about the verdict.”

Tuchel also called the goals disallowed. “You need a bit of luck, we scored three goals and had a big chance, they had a big chance, a draw is a fair result.”

By beating Chelsea, Liverpool won a record ninth Carabao Cup title.
