Defense cooperation between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia was signed in 2014. At that time a memorandum of understanding was signed between Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister of Defense Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud and Indonesian Deputy Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoedin.

According to Sjafrie, since diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in the 1950s, this is the first time there has been defense cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.

“The agreement between the two institutions includes cooperation in research and technology transfer in the fields of the main weapons system (defense equipment), training of special military forces related to handling terror, as well as cooperation in disaster management,” said Sjafrie in 2014.

Saudi Arabia, said Sjafrie, also has promising technology for the development of weapons systems. “For that, we will work together in research and development of defense equipment,” he said again.

During the visit of the Saudi Deputy Minister of Defense, Sjafrie briefly invited Prince Salman to the office of the Ministry of Defense, the Special Forces Command Headquarters, and the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base.
