Ex-Director of Ma’arif Institute said about Viral Dai Radikal

Jakarta, IDN Times – Former Executive Director of the Ma’arif Institute, Muhammad Abdullah Darraz, said that the weak resistance of the community was used by ‘radical’ preachers to infiltrate radicalism in society.

This, he said, was often caused by people’s ignorance, both towards extreme-radical content and ignorance regarding the map of actors and groups carrying radical missions and narratives.

“The problem in every process of infiltration of radicalism (radical groups) in the community is the weakness of resistance, as a result of the ignorance of the community itself,” said Darraz quoted from AMONGWednesday (9/3/2022).

Darraz’s statement followed the circulation of a chain message containing a list of 180 preachers called radicals and intolerant, ranging from Ismail Yusanto, Abdul Somad, Felix Siaw, to Adi Hidayat.

Darraz said the weak resistance of the people was marked by a lack of understanding of extreme radical views wrapped in stunning religious explanations. So that it confuses the public to distinguish which views have radical content and which do not.

“Secondly, the public’s lack of understanding (including within the apparatus) is related to the map of actors and groups carrying radical missions and narratives. So that people do not understand who exactly they are inviting,” he said.

2. Radical groups are always looking for gaps to enter every line

According to Darraz, radical groups will always look for loopholes to enter every line in order to spread the radicalism they profess. And the mode that is currently being used is to fill in recitations in various communities, including the TNI-Polri apparatus and their families.

“They are trying to exert more subtle influence so that their ideology can be accepted within the state apparatus, which is the bastion of the NKRI and Pancasila,” he said.

Darraz considered that subtle infiltration such as in religious pulpits could not be tolerated, because this was related to narratives and provocations that could lead to the destruction and division of the nation.

According to Darraz, intensive efforts are needed to sterilize the religious pulpit space from radical preachers, who carry and spread transnational ideologies to divide the nation.

“An elegant way is to activate the role of moderate community leaders in the smallest communities to government institutions, including the TNI-Polri apparatus themselves,” he said.

In addition, said Darraz, the government must also be more active in inviting moderate Islamic organizations, so that they are more active and active in carrying out Islamic da’wah that is wasathiyah.

“The public must of course be given a moderate religious understanding, and given the provision of ‘critical thinking’ in order to reject and prevent the potential for radical views,” said the man who is also the administrator of the PP Muhammadiyah Library and Information Council.

According to Darraz, moderate religious understanding must be the main requirement for a dai or lecturer to be invited to a religious forum/pulpit. If this is done, it will help eliminate the spread of radicalism-extremism in religious pulpits.

“Moderate religious organizations must also actively carry out regeneration to create preachers, preachers, preachers who have a moderate religious vision (Islam wasathiyah),” said Darraz.

The cadre, according to him, can be done by conducting massive training and campaigns related to moderate religious views to the community, and also actively involving lecturers from outside the organization.

Finally, Darraz advised the cadres of preachers, preachers, and preachers to have an understanding of the politicization of religion in the future, so that preachers would no longer be tools for radical groups to gain political advantage and interests.

“It is better if the candidates for preachers and preachers can equip themselves with religious views that are moderate, critical, tolerant of differences and have an understanding of the politicization of religion,” he said.
