It’s Rainy Season, Beware of DHF Threatening Your Family’s Lives!

Suara.com – In addition to the threat of Covid-19, Indonesia is also still facing the threat of other infectious diseases, namely dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), whose cases increase in the rainy season.

Pediatrician Consultant for Pediatric Infectious & Tropical Diseases, Dr. dr. Debbie Latupeirissa, Sp.A (K) said dengue often appears during the transition between the rainy season to the dry season.

“The disease caused by the dengue virus which is ‘carried’ by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito is characterized by typical symptoms such as high fever without any other symptoms, for example without cough, runny nose, or shortness of breath,” said Dr. Debbie in her statement, Monday (28/2/2022).

Among these common symptoms, there are also other symptoms such as pain behind the eyes, headaches, joint pain, to the appearance of red patches on the skin or bleeding.

“But usually red patches on the skin will appear in the middle or at the end of the DHF period, and are rarely seen at the beginning of infection,” he said.

The doctor who practices at Pondok Indah Hospital, Bintaro Jaya confirmed that because it is caused by a virus, the nature of this disease is self-limiting disease or can heal by itself.

But what is dangerous about this dengue fever is the critical period, which is called the horse saddle period, when the fever goes down and looks better, it is a critical period because the platelets can be very low.

That’s what causes dengue fever not infrequently take lives if they don’t get treatment right away.

“Especially if the DHF patient has entered a dangerous phase, and occurs in younger children who have not been able to express their condition. Therefore, many DHF sufferers are then hospitalized to be monitored more closely,” concluded dr. Debbie.
