Jurgen Klopp Says After Liverpool Won Carabao Cup By Beating Chelsea

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Liverpool won the Carabao Cup after winning on penalties over Chelsea in the match at Wembley, Sunday night, 27 February 2022.

Both teams played 0-0 until extra time. In the penalty shootout, Liverpool then won 11-10.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp happy that his decision to use reserve goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in the game has paid off.

Kelleher became the youngest goalkeeper to start a Carabao Cup since 2011. He helped the Reds seal a record ninth EFL Cup title.

Klopp said Kelleher deserved credit. “I think even in professional football, there has to be room for sentiment, to be honest,” he told Sky Sports.

“He’s still young, we asked him to do a lot of things in the competition to get us to the final, and then I (had to) tell him ‘you’re not going to play’?”

“I am two things, a professional football manager and a human being, and the man won. It’s great that it paid off, he deserved it.”

Klopp stated that when he told Allison he was not going to put him on, the Brazilian goalkeeper immediately cheered on Kelleher. “That’s how it should be, it’s really great,” Klopp said praising Allison’s attitude.

Klopp also praised the quality of the final match. However, he admits he prefers an easier route to the title. “I’m fine now! But I’ll be fine with 90 minutes, 1-0 Liverpool, and then we can go home,” he laughed.

“That’s great, and I’m glad that people can celebrate something like this in difficult times.”

According to him, the match against Chelsea was of great quality. “We matched each other, they started better, then we were better, and in the end both teams were locked together, it was a very long game.”

Klopp, who has also won the Premier League and Champions League, said Liverpool would struggle to win more trophies this season.

“This is a start, if you like!” he said. “We are not silly. You have to be lucky (to win), we needed luck tonight, and the game could have been 5-5! Without the offside rule, it would have been 5-5!

“We have a chance to fight (to win more trophies). We have to work hard, on Wednesday we play again and we will try,” said Jurgen Klopp.
