Causes and risk factors for GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid flows back up (reflux), into the food passage or esophagus.

When swallowing, the muscular valve that circles around the bottom of the esophagus (lower esophageal sphincter) relaxes to allow food and liquid to flow into the stomach, then the sphincter closes again.

Meanwhile, when the sphincter relaxes abnormally or weakens, stomach acid can flow back up or cause reflux.

If this continues, stomach acid can irritate the lining of the esophagus, causing inflammation.

According to page Mayo Clinicthe following risk factors for GERD:

  • Obesity
  • Protrusion of the upper part of the abdomen into the diaphragm (hiatal hernia)
  • Pregnancy
  • Connective tissue disorders, such as scleroderma
  • Delayed emptying of the stomach

Meanwhile, there are factors that can worsen stomach acid, namely:

  • Smoke
  • Eat large portions or eat late at night
  • Eating certain foods or trigger foods such as fatty or fried foods
  • Drink certain beverages, such as alcohol or coffee
  • Certain medications, such as aspirin

Many people experience acid reflux from time to time.

GERD is a condition of mild stomach acid reflux that occurs at least twice a week or moderate to severe acid reflux that occurs at least once a week.

This digestive disease can be overcome with lifestyle changes and the consumption of drugs. However, in severe conditions, people with GERD must undergo surgery.
