Lower the Risk of Cervical Cancer, Try Following This Healthy Diet

Several factors such as age, obesity, unprotected sex, consumption of tobacco-related products, pregnancy with complications, use of oral contraceptives, and unhealthy diet include the risk of cervical cancer.

Research has shown that diet can affect the body and potentially develop several diseases, including cervical cancer.

Reported from Times of IndiaDr Sonia Gandhi, Head of the Department of Nutrition and Clinical Dietetics at a hospital explained the importance of nutrition and a healthy diet to help prevent cervical cancer.

The incidence of cervical cancer related to diet is higher in developed countries compared to developing countries.

The most important role of diet or nutritional intake in relation to cervical cancer is prophylaxis and preventive measures against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection.

The important role of antioxidant vitamins in preventing the development of cervical cancer has received much attention.

The inflammatory process caused by HIV infection causes extensive damage to DNA proteins. Vitamins such as A, C, D and E can inhibit cancer cell proliferation and prevent DNA damage.

High intake of red and processed meats, snacks that have excess saturated fat, trans or unhealthy fats, refined grains, excess sugar and added salt are associated with a higher risk of HPV infection.

Foods to eat and avoid

If you want to lower your risk of HPV infection, a healthy diet should include whole grains, legumes, low-fat dairy products especially curd, fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish and a high ratio of unsaturated fat to saturated fat.

A higher intake of fruit and vegetables was associated with a 54 percent reduction in the risk of contracting an HPV infection. Consume nutritious plant foods which help in fighting cancer.

You should also include antioxidants, flavonoids, folic acid, lycopene, and carotenoids, most of which are found in fruits and vegetables.

Anti-inflammatory foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, soluble fiber, and probiotics are key components to prevent the progression of HPV infection to cervical cancer.

The diet is determined according to the individual needs of the patient based on several parameters, such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, renal insufficiency or other diseases.

Therefore, a balanced diet and especially plant-based plays a major role in preventing cervical cancer.

One should avoid processed foods and over-the-counter dietary supplements or products without a prescription.
