Motorcycle Tires Have Many Patches, Can You Still Use It?

Jakarta, IDN Times – Still talking about nail mines and tubeless tires. You already know that tubeless motorcycle tires are stronger when punctured by a nail, so the air pressure doesn’t run out right away until you find a tire repair shop.

But I’m also curious, does a tubeless tire actually have a maximum number of patches or not? To answer that question, IDN Times already asked Jimmy Handoyo, the Technical Service Dept. Head of PT Suryaraya Rubberindo Industries (SRI), which is a manufacturer of FDR tires.

1. Maximum number of tubeless tire patches

Jimmy stated that there is actually no recommendation for the maximum number of patches on tubeless tires. Basically, tires must be replaced if their construction is already badly damaged due to leaks.

“There is no recommendation for the maximum number of patches on tubeless tires, because it depends on the leak itself. Does it damage the tire construction or not,” Jimmy said to IDN Times some time ago.

So you have to know, how bad is the leak in the tubeless tires of your vehicle. Also make sure the patches are not close to each other, because if that happens, the tire construction will definitely be damaged and you should replace it with a new one.

But, still if the tire has a lot of patches it is uncomfortable. Jimmy said that if you have too many patches, it’s best not to use them again.

“Many patches cause the tire life to decrease. Because the tire layers that function as windbreaks have torn a lot,” said Jimmy.

Jimmy also added that tires with lots of patches are not comfortable to wear, so they should be replaced.

3. Don’t try to use leak-proof liquid

You might think about adding leak-proof fluid to tubeless tires that have lots of patches, because they are much cheaper than buying new tires. The leak-proof fluid is indeed claimed to be able to cover the holes in the tires with the liquid.

But, you better undo that intention. Leak-proof fluid is not recommended at all, especially by tire manufacturers. That’s because the leak-proof liquid contains corrosive elements that can damage the inside and rims of your motorbike.

So if your motorcycle tires have a lot of patches, replace them immediately for safety and comfort, OK!
