Named as Suspects, Haris Azhar and Fatia Undergo Investigation Monday

The Greater Jakarta Metro Police (Polda Metro Jaya), Friday (18/3) have named Executive Director Lokataru Haris Azhar and Coordinator of the Commission for Disappeared Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) Fatia Maulidiyanti as suspects in the case of alleged defamation of the Coordinating Minister for Human Rights. Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.

Haris and Fatia received a summons for questioning as suspects on Friday at nine o’clock in the evening. Haris is scheduled to start being questioned on Monday, March 21 at 10.00 WIB, while Fatia will start being questioned starting at 14.00 WIB.

The Head of Public Relations of the Polda Metro Jaya, Senior Commissioner Endra Zulpan, confirmed the determination of the two as suspects, and that the two of them would begin to undergo investigations at the Polda Metro Jaya next Monday.

Harris is sure to come

Responding to his status as a suspect for defamation of Luhut, Haris at a press conference on Saturday (19/3) explained that he would be present to undergo the examination. He said this legal process shows the poverty of integrity in the way the state deals with the situation, because currently there are many other important reports that have not been followed up by Polda Metro Jaya. But when there is a case involving a coordinating minister and a political figure who holds multiple positions, he said, this case immediately becomes a priority.

Even so, Haris felt honored that the alleged defamation case against Luhut would later lead him to prison.

“My body, my physique and I also believe that Fatia’s brother, we can be jailed. But the truth we are talking about is in the video on YouTube, he cannot be imprisoned. The suffering of Papuans cannot be suppressed and placed in prison. The suffering of Papuans is especially those in Intan Jaya will continue to scream for help,” said Haris.

Haris Azhar explained what he and Fatia were talking about via the YouTube channel, revealing two facts. First, there is a conflict of interest in a number of people who have more than one position, namely as business people as well as public officials. Second, according to Haris, namely the bad situation in Papua, especially Intan Jaya Regency, which continues to occur. Armed conflict continues between government security forces and the separatist movement, resulting in casualties and many refugees.

He questioned the government’s policy of responding to the bad situation in Papua by increasing the number of troops and increasing business concessions.

Haris regretted that in previous police investigations of him and Fatia, investigators had never touched on and explored the study conducted by Kontras and eight other non-governmental organizations regarding the involvement of a number of state officials, including Luhut, in the mine in Intan Jaya.

At the same press conference, Julius Hebrew, Fatia’s attorney, said that his client had answered the two subpoenas sent by Luhut. He added that the word “play” was Fatia’s way of explaining in a simple way the study made by Kontras and a number of other non-governmental organizations regarding mine ownership in Intan Jaya Regency.

“Until now, there has never been any kind of rebuttal. There has never been a request for clarification or a request for revision related to the research results submitted by Fatia as the Contrast Coordinator in Haris Azhar’s YouTube material,” said Julius.

As a result, continued Julius, it is not known what information is considered true and which is not true and what information is considered to defame Luhut.

He considered this an unfair legal process, closed and in the hands of power.

Accused of “playing” in Papua, Luhut sues Haris and Fatia

Luhut’s report to the police about the alleged defamation of his name by Haris and Fatia began with a conversation between the two on Haris’ YouTube channel. At that time, Haris and Fatia said Luhut was playing in the mining business in Intan Jaya Regency, Papua Province.

Before reporting Haris and Fatia to the police, Luhut had several times sent subpoenas to the two. In the summons, Luhut demanded Haris and Fatia apologize through Haris’ YouTube channel. [fw/em]
