Omicron Variant Lasts a Day on Skin and Over a Week on Plastic – A study by researchers from the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Japan has claimed that the Omicron variant can survive on skin and plastic longer than previous coronavirus variants.

According to this study recently posted on BioRxiv, the Omicron variant can survive on the skin for more than 21 hours and up to 8 days on any plastic surface.

This is probably what causes the Omicron variant to spread faster than other coronavirus variants, such as the Delta, Alpha, Beta and Gamma variants.

In this study, the researchers compared the survival times of other coronavirus variants. They concluded that the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta variants could survive on plastic surfaces for 56 hours, 191.3 hours, 156.6 hours, 59.3 hours and 114 hours, respectively.

Meanwhile, according to The Hans Indiathe Omicron variant can survive on plastic surfaces for 193.5 hours or more than 8 days.

In skin samples, the average survival time for the original coronavirus was 8.6 hours, 19.6 hours for Alpha, 19.1 hours for Beta, 11 hours for Gamma, 16.8 hours for Delta and 21.1 hours for variant. Omicron.

The findings also include the effectiveness of ethanol on all variants of the coronavirus. Although, the Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron variants showed a slight increase in ethanol resistance in response to increased environmental stability.

All of these coronavirus variants of concern on the surface of the skin were completely inactivated by a 15-second exposure to 35 percent ethanol.

This confirms that frequent use of hand sanitizer is highly recommended to kill the corona virus and its variants.

The Omicron variant itself is the latest variant of the Covid-19 corona virus which was first identified in South Africa on November 24, 2021.

Since then, the variant has spread rapidly enough to replace the Delta variant which was once dominant.
