Only the best people are not enough to make the OJK Board of Commissioners

Jakarta, IDN Times – A total of 21 people successfully passed the selection process for candidates for the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (DK OJK) for the period 2022-2027. The DK OJK Selection Committee (Pansel) has given the 21 names to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo before deciding on 14 names to be submitted to the People’s Representative Council (DPR).

Director of Research Director of the Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) Indonesia, Piter Abdullah, said that the 21 names who successfully passed the selection were the best people in their fields.

“The 21 candidates selected for the seven OJK commissioner positions are the best people. They have sufficient knowledge and experience capacity plus trustworthy integrity,” said Piter, to IDN TimesWednesday (9/3/2022).

However, according to him, it is not enough to form an ideal board of commissioners. Why is that?

However, the presence of the best people as DK OJK is not enough to advance the financial industry. For Piter, it is necessary to improve the decision-making process at OJK which can make the board of commissioners more solid.

Piter looked in the mirror from the past and current leadership of the OJK DK which should have been able to make the financial system better, but was hindered by situations and conditions.

“Pak Muliaman Hadad and Wimboh Santoso are the best people who should be able to make our financial system better, but the decision-making system at OJK is not supportive enough,” he said.

Based on this, Piter assessed that the replacement of the OJK DK from period to period would not necessarily improve the financial system in Indonesia. One way that Piter considers to be able to improve the OJK DK decision-making system is through amendments to the OJK Law (UU).

“It is necessary to immediately amend the OJK Law, in particular to improve the decision-making system of the OJK Board of Commissioners,” said Piter.
