Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia Becomes Indonesia’s Momentum

Jakarta, IDN Times – MotoGP has finally returned to Indonesia after more than 20 years of absence. Previously in 2019, Dorna Sports as the operator of MotoGP, announced that Indonesia would be one of the hosts for the most prestigious motorcycle racing.

The pre-season test was even held at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, last February. The Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia itself will take place from 18 to 20 March 2022.

Fajriyah Usman, as Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), discussed the extent of Pertamina’s involvement in this year’s MotoGP event at the Lombok Writers Festival (LWF) 2022.

As is known, Pertamina is the main supporter of the construction of the Mandalika International Street Circuit and the implementation of the Mandalika International Street Circuit events MotoGP in Mandalika.

Apart from being the pride of the Indonesian people, said Fajriyah, the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia is also a form of support in increasing the tourism potential of Mandalika which is one of the 5 Super Priority Tourism Destinations (DPSP).

“This is a great honor. We can present it not only to the people of Indonesia, but also to the world community. This activity is also a form of our support for increasing tourism, especially in Mandalika,” he said while attending virtually the Lombok Writers Festival 2022 organized by IDN Times, Wednesday (9/3/2022).

2. Distribute revolving capital assistance to MSMEs

Fajriyah further explained that in addition to support for circuit construction, Pertamina has also distributed revolving capital assistance to MSMEs in Mandalika in particular, and NTB in general. There are at least hundreds of Pertamina’s MSME partners who have been given various trainings, in order to develop their potential so that they can advance to class or even go global.

Previously, Pertamina had also held a business meeting for MSME actors together potential buyers from the hotel industry in NTB. Of the dozens of MSMEs involved, there are 6 Pertamina fostered partners who have successfully entered into transactions with dozens of hoteliers around the DPSP Mandalika Lombok area.

Fajriyah said, these programs aim to generate sustainable growth, as well as a form of Pertamina’s support in achieving the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) related to the provision of employment and economic growth.

“Pertamina’s assistance for MSMEs is basically that we provide revolving capital for MSMEs to be able to develop their potential. We also provide training so that MSMEs can advance to class. What used to be traditional can upgrade to become more independent MSMEs, it can even go global,” he said.

Pertamina provides 50 booth space in the commercial area of ​​the circuit to be used free of charge by local F&B (culinary) MSME actors at the event events MotoGP. Fajriyah said, the products that will be sold have been curated and are the best products that can be enjoyed by visitors.

“So there is no burden that we give to MSMEs. They can run their operations as well as their business, so they can develop their business to the fullest,” he said.

Pertamina also made the Mandalika Art Tunnel, which is a mural artwork in two tunnels in the circuit area by involving several Indonesian visual artists, including local artists in Lombok.

4. Strengthen Indonesia’s image

By supporting Mandalika Street Circuit and events MotoGP at Mandalika, Pertamina also aims to strengthen Indonesia’s image as a tough country in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fajriyah also believes that the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia will have a huge impact, especially for the tourism sector, because it will be broadcast in more than 200 countries, reaching 428 million households and 7 billion viewers.

Indonesia itself is one of the countries with the largest MotoGP audience. So far, MotoGP does have a bigger fan base than Formula 1. With that fact, Indonesia’s name can be raised through the Mandalika circuit.

“This is the right moment for us to show the world that Indonesia has resilient in the management of the pandemic. We show the world how beautiful Indonesia is. In particular this circuit has view natural beauty which is extraordinary and can provide attractions to tourists all over the country,” explained Fajriyah.

For information, Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit has a track length of 4.31 km with 17 bends. Pertamina invested around IDR 3.6 trillion to build this world-class circuit.

5. The thirst quencher for MotoGP lovers

Pertamina’s support, continued Fajriyah, is expected to bring fresh air to increase tourism potential and is a realization of Pertamina’s and BUMN’s commitment to bring International Motorsport to Indonesia.

“The hope is that it will open up opportunities in business development on a global scale to support national economic growth in the future,” he explained.

The Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia is also expected to be able to quench the thirst of MotoGP lovers, after 25 years ago the MotoGP event took place in Indonesia.
