Positive for COVID-19, Aaron/Soh cancels participation in German Open 2022

Jakarta, IDN Times – Malaysia’s main men’s doubles team, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, had bad luck. Both are confirmed to withdraw from the BWF Super 300 German Open 2022 following the results of Soh Wooi Yik’s test which was confirmed positive for COVID-19.

Until now, Chia/Soh have only withdrawn from the German Open 2022 tournament. Both are predicted to appear again at the All England 2022 event next week.

The German Open 2022 tournament itself is planned to take place at Westenergie Sporthalle, Mulheim an der Ruhr, Germany on March 8-13, 2022.

1. Confirmed positive before departure

Chia/Soh canceled their intention to participate in the German Open 2022 after Soh Wooi Yik was confirmed positive for COVID-19. This is the first time they know about their departure from Malaysia.

“We found out that Wooi Yik was positive before departure on Saturday after doing a PCR test. We didn’t go to the airport with the others,” said Aaron Chia, quoting The Star.

Canceled appearing in the first European tournament, Chia/Soh did not feel disappointed. Both decided to comply with the rules by staying in Malaysia and withdrew from the German Open 2022.

A week after the German Open 2022, the European tournament will continue to the world’s oldest badminton event, All England 2022. This event will take place at the Utita Arena Birmingham, England.

Chia/Soh are targeting to return to compete in the Super 100 event. The bronze medalist of the Tokyo 2022 Olympics hopes that Soh Wooi Yik will soon be negative from COVID-19.

“We have less than a week for the All England. We hope everything is under control before Friday so we can fly straight to Birmingham,” said Aaron Chia.
