Shanghai Experiences Exponential Surge in Covid-19 Cases, Government Tightens Lockdown

Suara.com – China’s capital, Shanghai, has seen an exponential or ‘very worrying’ spike, with an increase of more than 3,500 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours.

The government also imposed a strict lockdown for the city with the largest population, reaching 26 million people.

The local Health Department also said it was worried because most people who tested positive for Covid-19 were asymptomatic or asymptomatic.

China’s National Health Commission recorded 1,293 new cases, of which 1,228 were locally transmitted and 65 were imported infections.

According to reports The Health SiteThis comes after Shanghai experienced a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases, forcing Chinese authorities to divert some international passenger flights to other cities from March 21 to May 1.

Earlier this week, the government also announced that China was considering a phase of strict lockdown for Shanghai.

According to officials, the lockdown, which will be implemented in two phases, will be the widest in China since the start of the pandemic in the city of Wuhan.

The country has also imposed various measures to suppress Covid-19 cases since the start of the outbreak, but Omicron’s highly contagious subvariant, BA.2, is ‘testing’ China’s zero-Covid policy.
