Shin Tae-yong Explains Why The Indonesian National Team Didn’t Play in the FIFA Matchday March

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian national team will not compete during the FIFA Matchday in March 2022. This is in accordance with the request of coach Shin Tae-yong.

The Indonesian national team coach has other plans for the squad to be prepared for the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification. The team consists of the majority of Vietnam’s 2022 SEA Games players.

Another reason is that the Indonesian national team’s ranking target in FIFA has been met. Because of that, Shin Tae-yong didn’t want his team to play on FIFA Matchday.

“Honestly, FIFA Matchday is important, but we have fulfilled our target, which is to enter port 3 of the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification, by beating Timor Leste and there will be a match against South Korea U-20,” said Shin after leading the inaugural training of the U-20 national team. 19 at Madya Stadium, Gelora Bung Karno area, Jakarta, Wednesday, March 2, 2022.

For that reason, Shin Tae-yong asked the General Chairman of PSSI, Mochamad Iriawan, not to compete in the FIFA Matchday this March.

“I ask the PSSI General Chair to be understood and the General Chairperson has given permission so that we can fight South Korea U-20, because it is very important,” he said.

The South Korean coach added that in preparation for the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification, as many as 80 percent of them were players who would compete in the 2022 SEA Games Vietnam. “So with these players we are preparing for the Asian Cup,” he said.

Based on the draw for the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification, Indonesia is in Group A, which is filled with Jordan, Kuwait and Nepal. Seeing the competition in the group, Shin targets his team to qualify as group runner-up.

Currently, Shin Tae-yong is holding a training camp with the U-19 national team in Jakarta before continuing his training in South Korea. They will train in Gyeongsangbuk-do on March 13-24, then continue to Daegu on April 24-10.

While in South Korea, the Indonesian national team is planned to conduct several test matches, including facing the South Korean U-20 national team.

For the team that will compete in the SEA Games later, Shin Tae-yong plans to call the players who are playing abroad. The multi-sport event in Southeast Asia is scheduled to take place on 12-23 May 2022.

“For the SEA Games we want to use players who are overseas. We are currently communicating with the federation, so that the federation can make a call from now on. The federation is in talks with these clubs,” Shin Tae-yong explained.

There are a number of championships that the Indonesian national team will participate in throughout 2022. Coach Shin Tae-yong has explained the plans and targets to be achieved for his squad to PSSI some time ago.
