SIM Validity No Longer Follows Birth Date, Beware Forgot!

Jakarta, IDN Times – A driver’s license (SIM) is one of the documents that you must have to drive a motorized vehicle. Previously, the validity period of the SIM will follow your birthday, aka the date of birth of the SIM owner, but now it’s different, you know.

You must remember this, because if you are late to renew your SIM you have to make a new SIM and repeat the written and practical test again.

1. The SIM validity period has been changed since 2019

Even though this rule has been in effect since 2019, but there are still many who don’t know about this rule. The problem is that there are still many people whose old SIMs have not expired, or there are also new ones who want to make a new SIM in the near future. So there’s nothing wrong with reminding you.

Actually, the validity period of the SIM is still the same as before, which is five years. It’s just that now the validity period of the SIM starting from the date of issue. This is based on the Korlantas telegram No. ST/2664/X/Yan.1.1/2019.

2. Advantages and disadvantages of the new SIM validity period

With this new rule, the validity period of your SIM can be longer, you know. If you still follow the previous rules, the validity period of your SIM can be less than five years depending on the date you make it and your birthday. If it’s now, it’s five years.

But although the validity period of the SIM can be longer, this rule also has its drawbacks. That is, you can no longer use your birthday as a benchmark for renewing your SIM.

3. SIM renewal fee

If you just realized that the validity period of your SIM is about to expire, you should immediately extend it. The license renewal fee has been regulated in the National Police Chief Regulation Number 9 of 2012 concerning Driving Permits.

To extend SIM C, it costs Rp. 75 thousand, while SIM A and SIM B costs Rp. 80 thousand to renew, SIM D is Rp. 30 thousand, and International SIM is Rp. 225 thousand. But it must be remembered that there is an additional fee for a medical test of Rp. 25 thousand and insurance of Rp. 30 thousand.

Requirements or documents that you must bring when you want to renew your SIM are the original and photocopies of the ID card, the old driver’s license, medical tests, and psychological tests.
