1. Better adaptability outside the womb

“Milk regulation is a very common problem in infants, especially premature babies,” explains assistant professor of pediatrics and neonatology Malika D. Shah of Northwestern Feinberg University School of Medicine.

Because the mother’s skin temperature is the same as in the womb, the baby will be easier to adapt to the post-birth environment when it is skin-to-skin.

2. Improved mental development

Premature infants who received skin-to-skin contact had better brain function at 15 years of age, compared to adolescents born at term.

Skin to skin contact is able to stabilize heart rate, oxygenation, and improve sleep quality.

3. Increase healthy baby weight

One Cochrane Library review concluded that skin-to-skin contact significantly increased the addition of newborns.

“When babies are warm, they don’t need to use their energy to regulate their body temperature. They can use that energy to grow instead.”
