US-born player, Cyrus Ashkon Margono, interested in defending the Indonesian national team

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A young American player, Cyrus Ashkon Margono, is interested in being naturalized by Indonesia. The goalkeeper who plays for the Greek club, Panathinaikos B.

Cyrus Ashkon Margono’s interest in defending the Indonesian national team was conveyed by the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Greece, Bebeb AK Nugraha Djundjunan, during a visit to the PSSI office, Wednesday, March 2. He was accepted by PSSI General Chair Mochamad Iriawan, Secretary General Yunus Nusi, Deputy Secretary General Maaike Ira Puspita, and Technical Director Indra Sjafri.

Bebeb said Cyrus Ashkon Margono was still young. “This player wants to become an Indonesian citizen (WNI). He is still 20 years old and now plays at the Panathinaikos B club. His position is goalkeeper,” he said, as quoted by the PSSI page.

PSSI was enthusiastic. This is because the player who was born on November 9, 2001 with a height of 190 cm has good prospects if he can join the U-23 team or the senior national team.

“I am grateful for the input from the Indonesian Ambassador to Greece. We will first study the administration and others. However, this is good input for PSSI,” said Mochamad Iriawan.

Cyrus Margono has Indonesian descent from his father. His mother is from Iran. This player was born and raised in the United States. The blood of Indonesian descent can make him a part of the Indonesian national team as did Elkan Baggott. Moreover, he is not yet 21 years old.

Cyrus Margono has been involved in football since the age of four and studied at the New York Soccer Club and the Met Oval Academy. In 2015, he had the chance to experience the forging of Inter Milan Academy for two weeks.

In 2019 he joined the University of Denver football club. Then the following year, he moved to the University of Kentucky and joined the university’s club, the UK Wildcats.

At UK Wildcats, Cyrus Ashkon Margono’s potential was smelled and was recruited by Greek club Panathinaikos on a three-year contract. However, he is still at Panathinaikos B and competing in Super League B in Greece.
