Women Must Have the Courage to Speak Up If They Experience Violence

Jakarta, IDN Times – The Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA), Bintang Puspayoga, said that International Women’s Day 2022 is the right momentum to build knowledge and synergy related to women’s protection.

He explained that having the courage to voice trust in women who are willing to open up about the violence experienced or known is a shared task. This also needs to be continued by providing motivation for other women who are still shackled in discrimination.

“Only by coming together and joining forces, can we create an equal and friendly world for women,” Bintang said at the international webinar’Empowered Woman, Dare to Speak‘, Thursday (10/3/2022).

Bintang said that collective awareness is needed from the government, the business world, the media, community institutions, academics, community leaders, religious leaders, and the general public.

“All of us, must be part of the solution, because silence is not an option. Women are strength for themselves, their families, nations and countries, even the world,” he said.

International Women’s Day 2022 with the theme ‘Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow‘, according to Bintang, reflects the progress that women have made so far.

Women have voiced change, contributed to decision-making, and to celebrate the courage and determination of women who have played an extraordinary role in contributing to community, country and the international community.

“Hopefully this auspicious day can serve as a reminder for all of us that women are a very valuable human resource, which can bring progress to all in all situations, including crisis situations. For this reason, equality and protection for women is a non-negotiable common goal so that women can participate in all lines of development,” he said.

Bintang described data from the 2021 National Women’s Life Experience Survey (SPHPN) conducted by the KemenPPPA. He explained, physical and/or sexual violence perpetrated by partners and other than partners in 2021 was experienced by 26.1 percent or 1 in 4 women.

His age range is 15-64 years during his lifetime, this figure has decreased in total when compared to the 2016 survey.

Bintang regretted the fact that there was violence on the ground, this phenomenon happened to haunt women more than men whose figures were considered to be very concerning.

Bintang said that the trend of increasing case reporting in the midst of decreasing prevalence of violence in general was quite a good thing. This indicates that the community is starting to have the courage and confidence to make a complaint report to the available complaint service.

“The more massive use of social media has also contributed to uncovering various cases of violence. Of course this is also inseparable from the courage of women in breaking down social constructions that have silenced women. This is why women must have the courage to speak up and their voices must be heard,” he said. ,
